 Last Saturday, Sydney saw Goldie conclude his Oceanic tour with MC Lowqui and celebrate forty years of being a badman. More than a thousand punters packed out a rejuvenated Home to share in the festivities.

A new soundsystem was in effect for the club reborn. Not quite the Valve system, but only a few tweaks away from brilliance. Arriving elevenish, unfortunately missing Sydney stalwart Dave Edwards, Vice Versa were warming up with a few deep ‘uns like D-Bridge’s 'Pipe Dreams' off the Monochrome EP. Low-key for 12:30am, but rollin’ beats all the same. By this time, 700 people were there across three areas. It was a dnb gig on a wickedly large scale, good to see Sydney could once again have a scene thriving in numbers.
Next up, the Kiwi DJ brought out especially dropped some standard floor fodder. A decent DJ, but maybe he played a more inventive and surprising set in his hometown. It’s noted many DJs come all the way to Sydney and play lowest common denominator music, leaving their best dubs in the box. Tonight Goldie was a wicked exception - 'twas a technicolour selection on its way. By 1:30am the venue was packed, the room was heaving and one had to be wary of limbs akimbo. The smoke drifted up into the rafters where people craned their necks over the main floor. Anticipation clouded the air - the late start/late finish was well worth the wait.
The moment had arrived. Lowqui as Batman, and Goldie as Robin burst onto the stage with a force that shot through the room like a cannonball. It was 2am and the patient crowd were ready to party, and party they did. Goldie brought it like no-one else can - that unmistakable Metalheadz sound we know and love - stealthy beats and ominous, thudding bass charged with furious emotion and hip-winding rhythm. LowQui was a true Master of Ceremonies, his buoyant energy and solid mic technique maintaining lustrous vibes until dawn. The viscerally involved MC let his love for the music burn through his voice, escalate the tunes and amplify the mood.
Early in the piece, Goldie brougt D-Bridge once again with ‘True Romance VIP’. He started off dreamy, with tracks like Commix's 'Urban Legend' and 'If I Should Fall’. Metalheadz was on high rotation, with tunes like Blame’s ‘Psychotropic’ and several others off the Winter Of Content LP. Killers like Amit's 'Gatecrasher' smashed up the place. John B's 'Up All Night' remix and its housey breakdown went down a treat with the Home househeads, as did ‘Defcom 69’ by Total Science.
Goldie’s lengthy set built up steam and descended into the darkside as the morning broke. Late in the piece, plenty of old gems like 'Shadow-boxing' by Nasty Habits, aka darkside don Doc Scott, not to mention a healthy smattering of unrecognisable dubplate pressure. LowQui maintained the mood, brocking out like a robot to Influx UK's ‘Take My Soul’ (Twisted Individual remix). As the set drew to a close at nearly 5am, Goldie gave a birthday speech about his twelve years in this music - keeping the sound strong for the future, not letting the worldwide reach of drum n bass let the original sound be diluted. Swilling vodka straight from the bottle, the man dropped ‘Inner City Life’ and the room went apeshit. LowQui produced a candlelit cake and champagne and Goldie did something he had never done before - played a tune to a room of over a thousand people with NO BEATS. At this heady moment, Loxy and Ink’s remix of ‘Angel III’ concluded proceedings. On his proud bow-out, he lifted up our very own badbwoy in salute, and Murda 1 proved his alias is not just a clever name - devastating the floor with a b-boy assault worthy of the man who preceded him. Alongside our own DJ Joose, the local boys demonstrated the sick talent in our backyard. Evol Intent's always popular Corrupt Cops went down a treat and ended a satisfying night on a high note.
Saturday night was a prime example of a first-class selection and a first-class MC. Goldie delved deeper and we left in the bleary-eyed morning contented. Big ups to everyone who made this a gig to remember.
