Boot catches up with Typecell to get some of his neuronerd questions answered!
>The name Typecell (Guido Hoppe) is synonymous with the technoid drum & bass
sound currently emanating from Germany. His Protogen label is recognised
worldwide as a leader in the neurofunk/tech styles of dnb, with artists such
as Phace, N:phect & Dizplay and Australia's very own Speakerwrath appearing
on the roster. He has also had tunes remixed by some of the creme de la
creme of the tech world, including Kemal, Rob F (Sinthetix), Black Sun
Empire and Chris Su. Typecell is also a firm believer in the strength of
technology, recently creating his digital branch of Protogen, aptly named
Protodigit, to make crisp cutting edge neurofunk easily available worldwide.
An in-demand DJ and incredibly prolific producer, he's due to release his
7th LP 'Macrocosm' in mid 2007. Boot harassed Typecell over AIM to answer
some burning questions he had for the lanky German one:
What can Australia expect from your DJ sets?
Forward thinking drum and bass music.
You were originally a techno producer, what made you switch to drum n bass?
In 1999 I was bored by the normal techno/house sound and felt like doing
something new. At the same time there were releases in the dnb sector, e.g.
"Makai - Stealth LP" which were concerned with a more technoid kind of dnb
and thus sparked my interest to veer toward that.
Do you still work on other styles of electronic music?
Yes, I still do techno/electro/downbeat tracks from time to time.
a few tracks are released on the Protogen sublabel Subplate Recordings and
other labels.
Which artists, drum and bass or otherwise, do you admire the most?
I know too many amazing dnb artists around the world to name any single
name(s). sorry ;)
In the techno sector it is atm James Holden & Thomas Schumacher.
You are quite a prolific producer. How long do you generally spend on a
track?
Mostly 2-3 days until the final mixdown is done. Sometimes longer...
What's the dnb scene like in Germany?
We have a productive and growing scene, split up in many sub scenes/crews
all over Germany.
How do the different regions of Europe differ within the d&b scene?
I would say it is not much different as anywhere else.
Every region has its favourite sound and more or less enthusiastic party people.
How did you hook up Kemal to remix your tune Astrocubic?
I was always a fan of his work. After I've started with my own
label the idea to ask him for a remix suggested itself. In the end
he chose Astrocubic for the remix out of a selection of tunes.
Where do you draw your inspiration for tune writing from?
Mostly from my surroundings, musical backgound or other music I hear.
What can we expect in the future from Typecell & your label Protogen?
Under Typecell I am currently working on my 7th LP with the name "Macrocosm" which
will be released in mid 2007 on Protogen.
Further I have to do remixes for Formula Redux,Malsum,Project Omega
Sigma, Sonar Girl and a few more.
In 2007 it is also planned to start some collab tunes with
Rayner, Budoka, Kenei, Paperclip etc.
Protogen has a few new talents in the artist rooster and will present them
with digital releases over the year. Furthermore, a digital Protogen artist
LP will be released and the continuation of the vinyl releases is also
planned.
You rely heavily on CD and MP3/Digital Download releases. How do the sales
of these compare with those of vinyl?
The digital selling’s cannot be compared with the vinyl selling’s but I prefer
cd/mp3 because they have better/clearer sound reproduction for the music we
create.
Who do you consider to be the frontrunning producers in the scene at the
moment?
We are all familiar with the overly hyped names at the moment but for me
personally people like Budoka, Malsum, Kenei, Paperclip, No Money, X-Zero and a few others also do
amazing work of late.
You've recently released the tune 'In The Shadows' by Brisbane's
Speakerwrath on your digital label Protodigit. How did you first hear about
these guys?
We first got in contact via AIM. They sent me some of their tunes and I
loved them. The signing from "In the shadows" for Protodigit happened very fast then.
Drums or Bass?
owns ;)
